Shoe Care Guide
we have spent over 35 years perfecting our craft, ensuring every pair of shoes we make is built to last. Our innovative, non-leather materials are designed for durability and comfort, but a little regular maintenance goes a long way in keeping them looking brand new.
Follow this guide to extend the life of your footwear and protect your investment.
Everyday Maintenance & Storage
- The 4-Hour Sunlight Rule: While it is perfectly fine to let your shoes air out, never leave them sitting in direct sunlight for more than 4 hours straight. Prolonged UV exposure will fade vibrant colors, and intense heat can warp synthetic materials and weaken the adhesives holding the shoe together. Always store them in a cool, shaded place.
- Air Them Out: Even highly breathable materials absorb moisture throughout the day. Give your shoes 24 hours to air out indoors between wears to prevent odor-causing bacteria.
- Prevent Stains Early: Before wearing a new pair out for the first time, spray them with a high-quality, invisible water and stain repellent designed specifically for fabrics and synthetics.
Material-Specific Cleaning
Always identify your shoe's primary material before cleaning to ensure you use the right technique.
- Knits and Mesh: These breathable fabrics require a gentle touch to avoid snagging. Use a soft-bristled brush (a clean toothbrush works perfectly) dipped in a mixture of warm water and mild detergent. Scrub gently in circular motions, and blot away excess moisture with a microfiber cloth.
- Canvas: Canvas can handle a bit more scrubbing. Use a medium-stiff brush with warm, soapy water to tackle dirt. For stubborn stains on white canvas, a paste of baking soda and white vinegar works wonders. Let the paste dry on the shoe, then brush it away.
- Synthetics and Vegan Leather: These materials are highly resilient and easy to maintain. Simply wipe them down with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap. Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach or pure alcohol, which can strip away the material's protective top coating.
- Rubber Soles (Midsoles and Outsoles): To get white rubber soles looking crisp again, use a melamine sponge lightly dampened with water.
The Deep Clean Routine
When your shoes need more than just a quick wipe down, follow these steps for a thorough clean:
- Prep the Shoe: Remove the shoelaces and the insoles. Wash the laces separately in the washing machine (placed in a mesh delicates bag) or by hand with detergent.
- Dry Brush: Before adding any water, take a dry, soft-bristled brush and sweep away all loose surface dust and dried dirt.
- Spot Clean: Dip a brush into a bowl of warm water mixed with a small amount of mild, dye-free laundry detergent. Gently scrub the shoe, working from the top down to the sole.
- Wipe Away Suds: Do not rinse the shoes under a running faucet, as soaking them can damage the internal structure. Instead, use a clean, damp microfiber cloth to repeatedly wipe away the soap suds until the shoe is clean.
- Air Dry: Stuff the toes with crumpled plain paper (avoid newspaper, as the ink can bleed) to help them keep their shape and absorb internal moisture. Leave them to air dry completely at room temperature, keeping the 4-hour sunlight rule in mind. Never put them in the dryer.
